What happens when an email bounces

When an email you send through Vaam hard bounces — meaning the receiving mail server rejects it permanently because the address doesn’t exist or can’t receive mail — Vaam detects it automatically and stops that step instead of continuing to send into the void.

  • The prospect’s current step is paused. No further emails are sent to them until you take action.
  • A review task appears in your task list, titled Email bounced, together with the exact address that failed.
  • The bounce is also visible on the prospect’s timeline, so you can see why outreach stopped.

Other prospects in the sequence are not affected — they continue as normal.

Open the Review task for the prospect. You have two options:

  1. Fix the address — enter a corrected email address and confirm. Vaam updates the prospect and resumes their sequence from where it stopped.
  2. Stop or skip — skip the current step (the sequence continues with the next step) or cancel the prospect’s sequence entirely to stop outreach.

[!WARNING] You can resume with the same address that bounced, but it will most likely bounce again. Repeated bounces hurt your sender reputation, so only do this if you have a specific reason to believe the original failure was temporary.

The most common cause. Correct the typo in the review dialog and confirm — the sequence picks up from the paused step.

Their mailbox was deleted, so every send bounces. Remove them from the sequence and reach out through a different contact or channel.

Occasionally a recipient’s mail server rejects valid mail. If you’re confident the failure was temporary, you can resume with the same address — but check the address first.
